American Pharoah Wins Triple Crown Making History

Were you watching the Belmont Stakes today?  What a historical day! Today, American Pharoah, won the triple crown at the 147th annual Belmont Stakes competing against eight other horses. It has been thirty-seven years since a horse has been crowned. American Pharoah is the 32nd horse to race for the triple crown, and today folks, he won! Pharoah when they went to register the horse, there was a typo on he registration papers. The name came about through a fan in a contest they had for this triple crown winner. Pharoh is the way you really spell the name and how ‘pharoah’ is pronounced.

Here is a little break down of what went down with our triple crown winner. Pharoah broke from the 5 post and went straight to the lead, directly to the rail. Pharoah stayed in the lead through the first turn and down the back stretch. Victor Espinosa, the jockey, was holding the reigns to keep Pharoah’s speed under control, letting him run just fast enough to stay ahead of the pack. This only happened until the final turn, then it was really off! Once Pharoah hit the top of the stretch, Victor let the reigns go loose, makig Pharoah run full speed through the rest of the course. He closed the gap so Frosted, the second place winner, could not take any lead. American Pharoah won by a strong 5 ½ lengths.

American Pharoah’s odds were 3:5. He is now our 13th triple crown winner.  They sold American Pharoah’s breeding rights for 14 million.  Maybe there will be more triple crown winners with a little help from American Pharoah. Who knows when they next triple crown winner will be. Hopefully it is not in another 37 years. Congratulations to American Pharoah!
