Russell Westbrook: Friend or Foe?

As much as it pains me to write this article, the truth is in plain sight and on display for the world to see. I’m not picking a fight on this one. Especially when the player in question just happens to play for my favorite team in the NBA. This season and the playoffs in particular, have put the Russell Westbrook “project” up for debate more than in past seasons.

The OKC Thunder found themselves in a 2-1 series hole, until they valiantly fought back from a 17 point deficit in game 4 to tie the Grizzlies at 2-2 and eventually win the series in a decisive game 7 at home. Many observers blame much of the Thunder’s misfortunes on the shoulders of number 0. Some of it is warranted and some of it isn’t. I definitely agree with some critics who call for Coach Scott Brooks to corral the perennial All-Star point guard.

I come from the old school where the term “point” guard doesn’t mean that the lead guard leads your team in shots per game. Especially in a situation where the league’s 4 time scoring champion is on your roster. That’s just absurd! I believe that the best point guards are those who set the table for their teammates and think for the coach when out on the floor. Also, pure point guards understand that when the offense breaks down and becomes stagnant, he then takes it upon himself to score the ball.

If you watch a Los Angeles Clippers game closely, Chris Paul epitomizes this sentiment to the fullest. He makes sure everyone is in the correct spots and if the offense stalls, Doc Rivers know that CP3 can create his own shot and more than not deliver! If you’re a basketball purest and really followed Paul’s career since his entry into the league, you’ve most likely seen this guy average 18.5 ppg and 9.5 apg. Those are career averages! He simply does it the right way! Westbrook on the other hand can give you ulcers just by watching one half of a Thunder game. Grabbing a defensive rebound and then taking the ball coast to coast, only to either pull up for a misfired 3 pointer or turn the ball over, doesn’t exactly scream “All-Star” to me. It actually screams SELFISH!

In my opinion, when the Thunder are on the offensive end of the court, the offense should be orchestrated through Kevin Durant end of story! I love the fact that Westbrook is a freakish athlete with a 40″ vertical leap. I love the fact that despite his detractors thinking he shoots too much, he still manages to play defense until the final buzzer sounds. Being a fan of the Thunder, I would also love it if Westbrook would become Robin to Durant’s Batman for just a season and help OKC reap the rewards they so richly deserve. There have been calls for GM Sam Presti to go after a more conventional floor leader for the Thunder. I think with a little more convincing from Coaches and Durant alike, Russell Westbrook just might turn into that traditional point guard but with a little spice added.
