Free Fantasy Tip: D/ST

,

After week one, you are either declaring your championship or jumping off a bridge.  Either way little tweaks to your roster can help for victories for the next couple weeks.  Now you shouldn’t be ready to trade away an elite RB (David Wilson) or WR (Dez Bryant) because they had bad weeks. But there is a spot on your roster that can be changed every week depending on matchups.

Your team defense can be a real difference maker in a close game, so don’t just take the position lightly.  Now if you have an elite defense like the Seahawks or 49ers, you can’t just let them go.  But if you have an extra roster spot, like an injured or suspended player or a 3rd stringer with a chance, you should use that to add versatile to your D/ST.  What is more valuable: a defense that can get you double digit points for a week or backup who won’t play unless an injury occurs in front of them?

Now if your defense is in the middle of the pack, like most people will be, feel free to drop and defenses on an almost weekly basis based on matchups.  You can always find a team that is facing a poor offense (hmmm…Jaguars…hmmm) on the waiver wire come every Tuesday.  Don’t stay loyal to an average defense just because you drafted them.  They could cost you key points in a weekly matchup and points that may add up at the end of the season for your totals (depending on how your league counts total points).
