Impact Redskins in 2013

, ,

Mini camps have passed for every team, and the focus has set in for the upcoming 2013-2014 NFL season. The Washington Redskins, NFC East Division Champions, are looking to build and improve upon their positive season last year. They finished with a conference record of 8-4, a division record of 5-1 and an overall record of 10-6.

Along with clinching the division title, the Redskins are looking to improve their overall record and be the first team to repeat as in the NFC East in 5 years. But most importantly, they are looking to make a harder playoff push and make a trip to the Meadowlands, for their first Super Bowl appearance since January 26, 1992.

For the Washington Redskins to find success in this upcoming season, they must find success from certain players. Here is a list of players, who’s contributions could lead to the Redskins having another winning season and lead them to making Super Bowl appearance.

OFFENSE

Trent Williams (Left Tackle)

Trent Williams is currently the Redskins’ key to success of the left-side. Last season, the right-side of the offensive line was very weak and as players battled it out in training camp for the starting spot, we can only hope it will improve. Williams though, is a player the Redskins must hold onto.

Last year was his first year which he started in all sixteen regular season games; it was his first pro-bowl invite as well. Skins’ fans are going to be demanding ‘the most’ from Trent Williams and I fully believe he will deliver. With concern for RG3’s knee, he is a key piece in protecting their franchise QB, not just this season but throughout his career.

Pierre Garcon (Wide Receiver)

Garcon will be  RG3’s ‘go to guy’ in this upcoming season. Last season, he only started in ten games but finished with 44 receptions for 633 yards and 4 touchdowns. In RG3’s debut, Garcon and Griffin linked up for an 88-yard touchdown pass against the New Orleans Saints.

Garcon came across small injury problems last season with a foot injury. If the Skins can help him stay around 100%, then their offense will evolve, with passing weapon scary to all opposing cornerbacks.

Alfred Morris (Running Back)

When Alfred Morris entered the NFL, no one knew who he was. A six round draft pick found himself starting due to Helu’s injury. He found himself in one of the most dynamic offensives. In his rookie year, Morris had 335 carries for 1,613yards, an average of 4.8yrds per carry.

He was able to play in all sixteen games last season and if he stays healthy will hopefully play in all of this year’s games. If Alfred’s rookie season is a sign of what is to come he is a major strength to the Redskin’s offense, especially the play action and run game. Hopefully, we do not see a ‘sophomore slump’.

I also believe Roy Helu Jr. will be back in full form to help Alfred Morris stay on his game.

Robert Griffin III (Quarterback)

Hands down, RG3 is the most important player on the Redskins offense, and probably the entire team. Coach Mike Shanahan will have to be more cautious in how he uses athletic QB this season. Keeping RG3 healthy will not just save this upcoming season, but also save the franchise, long-term.

Last season, he led the Redskins to becoming NFC East Division Champions, taking them to their first playoff game since 2007. In his rookie season, RG3 attempted 393 throws and completed 258 of them, a completion percentage of 65.6%; he also added 20 TD passes.

RG3 also provides a giant run threat. During  the regular season, he helped end the Washington Redskin’s eight game losing home skid against the Minnesota Vikings. In the game, RG3 ran the ball for a 76 yard TD. While I do not know if Shanahan plans on running him a lot, I’m sure it will be a lot less than last season. The Redskins must help RG3 stay healthy.

Without a healthy QB, the Redskins do not have a respectable chance of winning the Super Bowl.

DEFENSE

DeAngelo Hall (Defensive Back)

Last season, Hall had four interceptions and two fumble recoveries; he has been a productive player for the Washington Redskins. Hall, along with Josh Wilson, will have two roles this season 1) contribute defensives with deflections and interceptions 2) help groom young defensive backs ( Richard Crawford, David Amerson etc).

Brian Orakpo (Defensive End)

Orakpo missed a lot of last season due to a torn pectoral muscle. He is coming back healthy and strong, with the potential to record double-digit sacks this season. Orakpo had 11 sacks during his rookie season, but since then his numbers have decreased. In 2011, his last full season, Orakpo 9sacks and 35 tackles.

When coming off injury you can face a lot of criticism, but I think Brian Orakpo will be able to handle it and provide the Skins’ defense with immense defensive help.  He will need to regain his rookie year form.

London Fletcher (LineBacker)

Co-Captain of the Washington Redskins, London Fletcher, has been an on and off field leader for the Skins since he first suited up for them in 2007. Last year, he had 78 tackles, 3sacks, 5 interceptions and one forced fumble.

Right now, there is no one in line behind Fletcher; the Redskins need to keep Fletcher as he provides ‘the glue’ our defense needs in acting as a cohesive unit.

 Ryan Kerrigan (Defensive End)

Kerrigan started playing for the Skins in 2011 and has been productive from the his first day. During his sophomore year, he was able to avoid a slump and increased his numbers in sacks and tackles. Kerrigan also has had an interception for a touchdown in both years of his professional career.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Kai Forbath (Kicker)

Most critiques over look kickers and their importance on a team. The Redskins have been in need of a solid kicker for years. With Forbath, the Redskins can have some consistency and strength at the kicker spot.

Last year, Forbath was 17 for 18 in field goal attempts. That gives Forbath a 94.4% accuracy. Forbath was also 11-11 in the 40-49yard range. Whether a field goal or touchdown, it is essential that the Redskins put up at least 3 points on the board every drive. With the help of Kai Forbath that is realistic.

I would also say that whoever ends up starting at FS is a key player and needs to step up at the position since it was a huge hole last since, whether it be veteran or rookie.

I agree, it is an important spot. We got two rookies and we will hopefully get a lot from Doughty or Meriweather.
