The Story Behind “Eight Lanes To Glory”

I had a lot of fun writing a book in screenplay format. Entitled Eight Lanes to Glory, it has nothing to do with racing or bowling. It’s a story about high school track. Most people don’t recognize that not all high schools have the same number of lanes on their tracks. Some high schools have six and others have eight.

My story is connected to the “no pass, no play” rule in youth sports. Student-athletes have to maintain a minimum grade point average to compete athletically. Sometimes the problem is caused by lack of ability in a particular subject. That’s what my story is about.

The idea emerged during the time I was a coach. I remember talking to co-coaches and former athletes about how they did in the high school classroom. Almost every one of them told me they had trouble in one subject or the other. Many struggled to remain eligible.

If nothing else, I hope the story makes readers think about issues outside the lines of sports–issues that really do affect athletes and the games. I’d like to think that my book brings those issues to the surface.

Eight Lanes To Glory is available on Amazon and Amazon Kindle.
