We had annual high school Powder Puff football games in Texas back in the 1990s. They were typically played on the same weekend as homecoming or a rivalry game. Today, girls’ flag football is growing in our state.
Today’s game grew out of its powder-puff roots. In my area, the Houston Independent School District (HISD) started its league with 12 teams before expanding across multiple campuses. Dallas ISD followed the same path, and it now includes thousands of athletes. This trend wouldn’t have happened without administrator commitment and funding.
We also have a state flag football championship, as we’ve had for decades on the boys’ side.
Memorial High School in Houston, my alma mater, sponsors a team. They’re good, too, going 10-0 and winning both the Houston Texans League and Regional Championship in their very first year. The Mustangs went on to play in the first-ever state championship game played at the University of North Texas in Denton. Rockwall-Heath (Heath, TX) won the state crown 20-6.
It was still a wonderful, rewarding season for my Mustangs. Head Coach Zoe Korman was named Houston Texans Coach of the Year, while Ashlyn Koy was named team defensive MVP and Top Rusher.
Congratulations, Mustangs!
