To Sports Icons, I Say “Thank You!”

Some say we need to put away “what was” and focus instead on the here and now. But in life and sports, that advice is more easily said than done. Indeed, I question whether it is even advisable to follow.

How can I forget about a sports hero who inspired me in my youth? Indeed, why would I?

I have so many childhood memories connected to Pele, Maradona, Vinoo Mankad, Don Bradman, and so many others. They may no longer be among us, but they are still close to my heart because these legendary players are the stuff that dreams are made of.

They were and are like pleasant, happy songs and melodies that feed your soul when food is not enough. These legends inspired generations of athletes and fans. Their contributions and achievements have stood the test of time. Like aged, fine wine, they are to be savored.

I admired them, and I still do, for the way they refused to give up/give in to their inner demons and critics.

Trust me, fans are grateful for those blissful memories, and we are grateful. These sports icons deserve to live on.
