Minnesota defeated the Giants, 13-10, in Saturday’s pre-season opener. Here are five things I believe stood out for the Vikings.

The Run Game Looked Good: Minnesota came out running the ball effectively, gaining 44 yards on its opening possession. Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason both had explosive runs, with the Giants struggling to contain Minnesota’s rushing attack.
Murray Made His Vikings Debut: Kyler Murray started and played the opening drive. He showed off his mobility and helped get the offense moving, giving Vikings fans their first real look at the new QB1.
McCarthy Was Inconsistent: J.J. McCarthy got extended preseason work but struggled to generate much offensive momentum. Penalties and some questionable execution hurt his performance. With Murray already named the starter, McCarthy’s preseason reps are now particularly important for evaluating his development as QB2.
Carson Wentz Came Up Clutch: Carson Wentz returned to the game after Max Brosmer suffered a wrist injury. He eventually connected with Myles Price for the game-winning 1-yard touchdown.
Defense Created Turnovers: Undrafted rookies Jacob Roberts and Jakobe Thomas each recorded interceptions. It was a huge positive for players fighting for roster spots. Dallas Turner and Jay Ward also made notable plays.
