Frank Fear tells the story of Darryl’s journey from DC playgrounds to basketball stardom. Informative, entertaining, and full of vignettes, it chronicles Darryl’s unwavering devotion to the game and those who play it.

TRUE PRUEDarryl Prue, Unwavering. A native of southeast Washington, DC, Darryl Prue was a Parade prep All-America at DC’s legendary Dunbar High, playing in a metropolitan environment that Pennington Green calls “The Birthplace of Urban Basketball.” Darryl learned his craft playing with and against the best DC players of that era.

At Dunbar, Darryl suited up with Tyrone “Stretch” Jones, Sean Avarado, Bonzie Colson, Tyrone Gibson, Kevin Sams, Darrell McLane, Michael Milling, Bernard “Scooby” Campbell, and many other outstanding players, coached by legendary Joe Dean Davidson. Among the opponents were Michael Graham (Spingarn), who went on to become a national championship winner at Georgetown; Danny Ferry (DeMatha), who starred at Duke; Sherman Douglas (Spingarn), who achieved similar success at Syracuse; Carlton Valentine (DeMatha), who excelled at Michigan State; Wally Lancaster (Coolidge) who made a name for himself at Virginia Tech; and Kenny Sanders, who went on to have a great career at George Mason.

Darryl played college ball for the West Virginia Mountaineers, the program that Jerry West made famous. There, Darryl starred under head coach Gale Catlett, compiling a four-year record of 89-38 (1985-89), including a 22-game winning streak in his senior year.

One of the most prolific players in WVU’s 120+ year basketball history, Darryl still ranks among the school’s Top 20 players in over 10 career categories, including games played & started, field-goal percentage & made field goals, rebounds, blocks, steals, scoring, and wins. His induction into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame is testimony to Darryl’s talent, versatility, and team value.

After college, Darryl played professionally in the U.S. and overseas, including Brazil, Spain, Slovakia, and South Korea. Darryl turned to coaching upon returning to the States, serving as an AAU assistant and head coach, a head coach at DC-area high schools, and a college assistant at Georgetown (twice), Morgan State, and Alcorn State.

TRUE PRUE tells the story of Darryl’s journey from DC playgrounds to basketball stardom. Informative, entertaining, and full of vignettes, it chronicles his unwavering devotion to the game.
