Only Boomer Can Help the Jets

If you are a Jets fan, you can’t possibly be happy right now. The Giants finally hired a head coach in John Harbaugh, who knows what he’s doing. Meanwhile, the Jets are stuck with head coach Aaron Glenn. Help! (Here’s how.)

It’s hard to be encouraged about next season after Glenn’s first season turned out to be atrocious, with a 3-14 record to show for it. The Jets’ head coach has shown he is not an NFL head coach, and that realization does not engender confidence that things will change in 2026.

Glenn will likely be coaching for his job next season, and at this point, he might be a lost cause. The players played like they stopped listening, and he doesn’t have an NFL quarterback.

But no matter what happens with Glenn, the Jets need a guy who can oversee the team as President of Football Operations. That guy is WFAN’s Boomer Esiason.

The former Jets quarterback would bring the gravitas the team badly needs. He would bring class, dignity, and respect to an organization that has been lacking all three for a long time. Discipline and organization would rise again. Guys would be proud to be a New York Jet. The country club days would end at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center.

He has been a winner everywhere he has gone. If the Jets hired Esiason, he would take charge and demonstrate that he is the right person for the job. Plus, the Jets need to hire a guy from this area who understands the Jets fans.

Esiason would relish the challenge of turning the Jets around. He has an ego that makes him want to be the guy who turns the franchise around. He wants to be as famous as Joe Namath. He would be a legend, and he wouldn’t buy a drink or food ever again at an establishment if the Jets finally win a Super Bowl.

I understand he enjoys working at WFAN, but turning around the Jets would be more fulfilling than doing sports talk there. Plus, it would beat working with talentless hack Gregg Giannotti.

But for Esiason to be interested, it has to be mutual. This is where Jets owner Woody Johnson needs to speak to him and ask if he wants to be the Jets’ point man. So, someone needs to get in Johnson’s ear and talk to him about the WFAN morning-drive talk rabble-rouser here. Esaiason is the best the Jets can get.

What do the Jets have to lose here? The worst thing Esiason can say is no. And if he takes the job, he could succeed as John Lynch has with the 49ers or not as Matt Millen did with the Lions.

I think there’s a good chance he’d follow in Lynch’s footsteps. Boomer is a smart guy who would inspire players with his relentless effort and commitment to the game and to the Jets. He is a team builder who wants to do well, and his philosophy of going with players with character rather than just talent and ability would be a refreshing change.

The bottom line? Esiason has it. The Jets would be foolish not to grab him.
