Sawyer Robertson’s time isn’t coming; it has arrived.
The Baylor Bears are no strangers to elite quarterback play. Robert Griffin III and Bryce Petty come to mind. A new gunslinger has emerged on the Brazos: Sawyer Robertson, and he’s turning the Bears into a Big 12 contender.
Robertson has thrown for more than 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns through the first three games of the 2025 college football season, earning a remarkable 150.3 passer rating. He’s producing video game-like numbers. More importantly, Robertson has positioned Baylor to make a run at the College Football Playoff.
Robertson graduated from high school as a four-star blue-chip prospect with offers from schools such as Florida State, USC, and Wisconsin. He chose the SEC route, committing to Mississippi State. After seeing little playing time with the Bulldogs, Robertson entered the transfer portal and landed at Baylor.
The move didn’t yield results, at least at first, positioned as he was behind Blake Shapen and later DeQuan Finn. But then he moved into the #1 QB slot when Shapen transferred, and Finn was injured.
Results? Robertson is 6-2 behind center, but he still didn’t garner much attention, including being listed as a potential pro prospect or as a Heisman-level candidate. Now that Baylor is back on the national radar, everybody knows his name.
Robertson gets another chance to shine this Saturday when his Bears host Arizona State, the reigning Big 12 champion (7:30 PM Eastern, FOX, -2.5 BU). The Bears need a win to position themselves in the race for a Big 12 title.
