Football’s Long Snapper AKA as an “Upside-Down Quarterback”

,

There’s an art and a science to long snapping.

Called Upside-Down QBs by Chris Rubio of Rubio Long Snapping, the position combines quarterback accuracy with the strength of a linebacker and the skill of an offensive lineman. Speed from snap to holder is 0.75 seconds in college and only 0.6 seconds in the NFL.

Jax Hickerson, Long Snapper: No one notices a long snapper unless they fail. But EVERY good extra point or punt starts with the snap, and with stress high, you have to stay locked in.

The long snapper is an integral part of a winning football team at every level of the sport, but they are often overlooked as game-changing playmakers. Everything starts with the snap! A long snapper, an offensive center, is only used in special team situations when they snap the ball to a holder or punter and then quickly make their way downfield or block following the snap.

Most NFL snappers are free agents, but Julian Ashby of Vanderbilt University in TN was drafted in round seven of the 2026 NFL draft when the Patriots selected him.
