Petra Kvitová’s incredible tennis career came to an end after a 6-1, 6-0 first-round defeat to Diane Parry at the US Open.
Despite a disappointing ending, Kvitová’s career will instead be remembered for her significant accomplishments. The Czech is one of the most decorated players of her generation.
Petra Kvitová: Thank you guys for coming. I hoped I would put on a better show today, but it was really amazing, tough to know that maybe it’s my last one and emotional, it was really tough.
Kvitová shot to prominence in 2009, when she won the Hobart International in Australia. Less than two and a half years later, the talented left-hander won her first WTA 1000 title in Madrid in 2011 and claimed her first Major shortly after at Wimbledon. Her powerful serve helped her defeat Maria Sharapova in the final. In 2014, she repeated the feat, winning The Championships with a comprehensive victory over Eugenie Bouchard.

While her performances on the court were phenomenal, Kvitová also showed immense resilience to bounce back from a knife attack in 2016, triumphing at the 2017 Birmingham Classic just six months later. Her third Major final appearance came in Melbourne in 2019, where Naomi Osaka beat her.
The former world No. 2 reached the semifinals of Roland Garros in 2012 and 2020, and the quarterfinals of the US Open in 2015 and 2017. Her last big success came at the Miami Open in 2023, a few months before she won her 31st and final title at the German Open.
With two Majors, nine WTA 1000s, a Tour Finals title, and an Olympic bronze medal, Kvitová departs as one of the most significant Czech tennis players ever to pick up a racket.
One of the best players of the 2010s competed in her last-ever match on Monday. She leaves competitive tennis with her head held high.
