Alex may be prepared to deflect a soccer crossover, but he is definitely flummoxed by Ashley’s dad.
A more appropriate title for Netflix’s Love is Blind might be: “I Hate Your Appearance. Leave Now!” While Love is Blind has struck lightning a few times, most of the “couples” wind up detesting one another.
It’s still relatively early this season (10), but one couple has already bitten the dust, somewhat unexpectedly. Everything was all rainbows and forever on the Cabo trip, but then they returned to Ohio, where the participants are from, and everything went awry. Specifically, the male participant, a fitness fanatic, informed his fiancée that her physique didn’t do it for him. Time out.
Hello! This dude is on the wrong show. He should be on Love is Blind: The CrossFit Edition.
With that, let’s get reacquainted with Love is Blind’s all-American soccer goalie, Alex Henderson, who walked on at Wake Forest and became an elite talent. Alex, who grew up without his father, shared that his birth wasn’t planned, referring to himself as a “mistake.” In short, Alex is someone to root for, at least on paper. However, as the episodes stream on, he’s showing more Mr. Ripley than Mr. Rogers tendencies. In Cabo, he flirts with another woman, and in the next breath, he shades his fiancée’s appearance. For whatever it’s worth, Ashley, Alex’s “fiancée,” is runway material.

In Episode 7, Alex – who’s the smoothest of smooth talkers – meets his ultimate test: Ashley’s father, a veteran attorney. On the surface, this friendly meet-and-meal is all smiles. But it quickly disintegrates into a Meet The Parents worthy interrogation, and Alex gets monetarily flustered by his would-be father-in-law’s sharp, relentless questioning.
Ultimately, Ashley’s father says this to Alex. “You’re flashy. You’re very polished. But the rest of it… I don’t know. Convince me you’re real.”
Yes, this father is wonderful. He should have his own show on Netflix, seriously.
When we see Alex and Ashley again, maybe a day or two later (Who knows in reality show time?), things aren’t so rosy. They bicker. He doesn’t like her rearranging his water in the fridge, and he doesn’t like that she doesn’t like his clothing folding. Meanwhile, Ashley wants, ah, more relations. There are other issues.
However, it’s not all bad. We do meet Alex’s mother, a commercial truck driver, who seems great.
Right now, Alex and Ashley are in a jump ball. We’ll see. In the meantime, Netflix should sign up Ashley’s father for his own show. Working title: I Know What My Daughter Needs.”
