Defense Closing-out Games. Both teams are recognized for their steady offenses, dependable starters, solid benches, and player rotations. But there’s another attribute that is telling the tale–the team that excels in 4th Quarter defense is coming out on top. In Game 1, the Thunder managed 25 points in Indiana’s 4th quarter comeback. The total was even less in Game 3 (another Indiana win) when OKC scored just 18 points in the final quarter. But OKC turned the tables in Game 4, allowing the Pacers 17 points. Everyone thought the Finals would be a showdown between the Pacers’ offense and the Thunder’s defense, but we’re seeing how important D can be when it matters most.

The X-Factor Effect: Which players can make significant, often unexpected, differences in a team’s success? Obi Toppin is that guy for the Pacers. Toppin put up 17 points in their Game 1 victory and added eight points in Game 3, adding two blocks that disrupted OKC’s momentum. He also had a plus/minus of 18+, which was better than Benedict Mathurin, who scored 27 points with a plus/minus of 16+. For the OKC Thunder, Alex Caruso is Mr. X. Solid on defense, his offense has been crucial for OKC, especially in the face of Aaron Wiggins’ and Isaiah Joe’s scoring challenges. Additionally, Caruso is the only Thunder player with previous NBA Finals experience.

Initially, many thought it would be a dominating series for OKC, but the Pacers will have the upper hand if they can nab a road win tonight. No matter the outcome, expect a gritty and intense matchup.
