Storyline: I just can’t see past Mayweather–no matter how I look at this match. And if this fight pans out, it could be a real catalyst for the sport of boxing.

It seems like forever that we’ve been listening to rumours of Floyd Mayweather v. Conor McGregor meeting in a boxing ring. Boxing and UFC fans have had a long time to spar over which code they think is the superior of the two. Experts from both sports have weighed in on how they think this fight could go, and the verdict appears to be leaning much more towards Mayweather than for McGregor.

This writer must confess to being more of a boxing fan, but I’m still able to watch and appreciate both codes for what they are. With big money fights, such as the likes of Froch v. Groves and Haye v. Bellew, boxing has enjoyed somewhat of a rise back to prominence over the past number of years, particularly in Britain and Ireland. There’s no doubt though that UFC is the bigger draw of the two, and the way UFC events are put together generates a level of excitement/interest that boxing has been missing for some time.

Be that as it may, the fundamental issue is the sport of MMA v. the sport of Boxing. The Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) ring requires a fighter to be aware of dangers coming from different sources, such as take downs, kicks, and punches to name a few; and Conor McGregor is clearly a phenomenal fighter. His power, speed and accuracy have taken many fighters by surprise. The boxing ring is a slightly more simplified environment. The fighter knows that damage is going to come from an opponent’s fists. McGregor is clearly a talented boxer.

In this fight, I just can’t see past Mayweather–no matter how I look at the match. Mayweather has perfected the art of defensive fighting down through the years and has dealt well with huge punchers such as Manny Pacquaoi, Miguel Cotto, and Diego Corrales. Beside, Mayweather is supremely skilled in the areas of MMA. Opponents cannot simply focus on blocking punches and ignore other threats the Crumlin man possesses.

People may point to Mayweather’s age and recent inactivity as positive points for McGregor. But Mayweather has taken extended breaks in the past without experiencing negative effects. I think Mayweather’s supreme boxing skills and experience will be too much for McGregor.

If the fight pans out, this could be a real catalyst for the sport of boxing. The sheer skill and talent needed to box at the highest level is often something overlooked by fans. Mayweather could remind the world just how much wizardry is involved in performing at the highest level in this sport of champions.
