My Top Teams In College Basketball

Storyline: Villanova keeps meeting expectations. UNC doesn’t. Gonzaga just wins. Written by Aric Anderson, Minnesota

Here’s my Top Ten list in college basketball. See if you agree.

1. Villanova – Nova has done everything they’ve needed to do to be #1–except for losing against Butler. They normally outscore their opponents by quite a bit, something that Kansas hasn’t been able to do as much.

2. Kansas – I’m not sure Kansas deserved to drop from #1 in the national rankings, but this team may not even be the second best team in the country. But on the positive side the Jayhawks didn’t lose last week and hey kept that incredible home winning streak going.

3. Gonzaga – Many people thought (and still think) that Saint Mary’s will be Gonzaga’s only loss in the WCC. The Zags were supposed to beat the Gaels at home, but I didn’t expect them to win by as much as they did (23). Bottom line: GU is the only undefeated team in the nation.

4. UCLA – The Bruins have continued to show their great offense, but UCLA got a scare against Utah on Saturday. The only Bruin loss was to Oregon on the road. And it was a buzzer-beater at that.

5. Kentucky – Kentucky looks to be the most talented team in the country. Coach Cal gets a great recruiting class every year, but UK has the same problem as Duke–players don’t always stay.

6. Creighton – The Blue Jays have been a surprise to me. I knew they were good, but I didn’t know they would be this good. The bad news is that CU just lost point guard Maurice Watson Jr. to a season-ending injury.

7. Baylor – There are only so many spots you can drop a former #1 team after a loss, but the Bears had a bad loss last week–on the road to West Virginia, losing by 21. It looked even worse than that at times, too.

8. West Virginia – The team that beat Baylor is now one spot below the Bears. The Mountaineers were primed to move up even more until they lost earlier this week (unexpectedly) to Oklahoma in Morgantown.

9. North Carolina – UNC is the only three-loss team in my top 10. I think UNC can lose to almost anybody when the Heels have a bad night (e.g., Georgia Tech), But the opposite is true: UNC can beat anybody, too.

10. Florida State – The last team I have on my top 10 is Florida State. They’ve looked impressive, especially in the ACC, with wins at Virginia and vs. Virginia Tech and Duke.
