To Jimmy Murphy With Love

, ,

Storyline: James Patrick “Jimmy” Murphy was an English footballer who made his mark as a player at West Bromwich Albion and as an executive & coach at Manchester United. He’s probably best known for taking over as ManU manager with a substitute squad in ’58 after the team experienced an air crash.

It’s the warm summer dusk as I sit upon the balcony
Sipping a few pints and favorite coffee
Staring at the first stars. Perhaps …
Recalling all those special memories of Murphy’s past.

In an eloquent nostalgia.
Probably, gathering the words to weave
Yet another beautiful marvel
That seduced all humanity’s mind and hearts.

Each move of his in Football is a fragrant garland worthy of adorning every altar of literary worship
For he has written with the intensity of experience
Even whilst professing an air of imagination
A wisdom borne from life
Striking forceful as enchanting as ’tis beauty.

You’d be gripped from the first word
And desire to gobble up all on offer
Hoping there was only an infinite more to be served.

Some words literally like your own soul’s unspoken whispers
Verily stolen from Murphy’s invisible diary of memories
Whilst we were perhaps dreaming.

The greatest boon one could deserve
Was to be a lover in his game’s arms
In the way a paper lay in her palms
Tattooed with her feelings on your skin.

For, Jimmy held a special charm and power.

Manchester United was, and is forever
The ultimate reward for the longing
A realization for the living
And the redemption for the lost.

About Ravi Mandapaka

I’m a literature fanatic and a Manchester United addict who, at any hour, would boastfully eulogize about swimming to unquenchable thirsts of the sore-throated common man’s palate.
