My All-Time NFL Offensive Team

Storyline: Here’s my All-Time NFL Offensive team.

There are two interesting things about my picks. First, no currently active players are on the team. Second, all the players picked are in the NFL Hall of Fame.

While many great players aren’t on my list, exclusion doesn’t mean they aren’t deserving. My picks are simply an expression of my opinion, nothing more. If you have a player that you think should be on the list, let me know who I should take off my list to make room for your player. I say that because I’d like to keep this list to no more than 100 players.

Center: I picked Jim Otto (1960-1974) but it’s really a toss up between Otto and Mike Webster (1974-1990). I have these two all-time greats followed by Mel Hein (1931-1945), Jim Langer (1970-1981), and Dermontti Dawson (1988-2000).

Tackles: At tackle I have Forrest Gregg (1956, 1958-1971) and Anthony Munoz (1980-1992), followed by Roosevelt Brown (1953-1965) Art Shell (1968-1982) and Johnathon Ogden (1996-2007).

Guards: I have my starters as John Hannah (1973-1985) and Jim Parker (1957-1967), followed by Bruce Matthews (1983-2001), Larry Little (1967-1980), Gene Upshaw (1967-1981), and Larry Allen (1994-2007).

Tight End: At tight end I picked John Mackey (1963-1972), followed by Mike Ditka (1961-1972), Kellen Winslow (1979-1987), Jackie Smith (1963-1978), and Dave Casper (1974-1984).

Wide Receivers: I have my starters as Jerry Rice (1985-2004) and Lance Alworth (1962-1972), followed by Don Hutson (1935-1945), Steve Largent (1976-1989), Raymond Berry (1955-1967), Charley Taylor (1964-1975, 1977), Paul Warfield (1964-1974, 1976-1977), and Michael Irvin (1988-1999).

About Mark C. Morthier

I grew up in Northern NJ as a fan of local sports teams–the Yankees, Knicks, and Rangers. But it was different in football: I was a Dallas Cowboys fan. In sports, I played high school football, competed in Olympic-style weightlifting (1981-1989), and I’m engaged currently in powerlifting (2011- forward). I’ve participated in nearly 60 weightlifting/powerlifting competitions and currently hold several New York State & New Jersey State records in the 50-54 (Masters Division) age group. I’ve also served as a weightlifting/powerlifting coach. In addition to competing I’ve always enjoyed writing, even though I don’t have special training in either journalism or sports writing. Writing is an avocation for me, an adjunct to my day job. For years I worked as a forklift operator, and today I’m a school bus driver in Upstate New York, I’m really honored to be a contributor at The Sports Column, and I have published several books that are available at Amazon.com: “No Nonsense, Old School Weight Training (Second Edition): A Guide for People with Limited Time,” “Running Wild: (Growing Up in the 1970s)”, and “Reliving 1970s Old School Football.” I love writing about old school sports!
