When Kobe Bryant announced he would retire after this season, Lakers fans were stuck wondering what’s next? As March has begun, Kobe is counting down his final days in the League. But what about life after Kobe?

Well, the Lakers have not performing well and are likely to land a top-5 draft pick. But if that pick is not in the Top 3? They’ll have to give up that pick to Philadelphia. Let’s say the Lakers do end up keeping that pick. and it just happens to be Number 1. Ben Simmons from LSU would certainly be an intriguing pick. Simmons, who has drawn comparisons to guys like Shaq and Lebron, would certainly help fastrack a likely Lakers rebuild.
With the possibility of Simmons–and a young D’angelo Russell already in the fold–the Lakers would at least be in the hunt for a guy like Kevin Durant or potentially Lebron. Adding one of these two guys, along with Simmons, would put the Lakers in the playoff hunt in a deep Western Conference.
That’s the best case scenario for the Lakers. The worst case scenario would be having to give up a first rounder to Philadelphia. The Lakers would have no one to build around and certainly wouldn’t look like an attractive landing spot for free agents. The Lakers would be sitting on a bunch of cap room wondering what would have been.
