Darrell Bevell Must Go!

Storyline: Darrell Bevell. He’s one of the worst OC’s in the NFL. He received undeserved credit with the Vikings. Now he’s cramping Seattle’s offense production.

I’m a Minnesota Vikings fan. I’ve been following the team since ’98 when Moss wrecked the League as a rookie. Now  Adrian is doing it.

Minnesota has gone through its fair share of coaches and coordinators. Most memorable for me were head coaches Brad Childress and Leslie Frasier, and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell. Bevell, in particular, irks me. He’s the most simple-minded, uncreative, inept offensive mind I’ve seen.

Bevell’s rise came during the 2009 season when my Vikings made it to the NFC Championship game, losing to the Saints in OT. You’ll remember this game as the “Bounty Scandal” that Roger Goodell botched. That year, a 39- year old Brett Favre threw for over 4000 yards and had 33 touchdowns to only 7 interceptions. Adrian Peterson rushed for over 1300 yards and had 18 touchdowns. Percy Harvin was the Rookie of the Year at WR.

That astonishing season–in what seemed to be a well-designed offense–was actually made out of the ‘smoke and mirrors’ that Bevell used to land his next job with Seattle. He’d eventually claim a Super Bowl Ring and became a champion-level coordinator. Yet if we open our eyes we can see how a Magic Trick was performed.

Brett Favre created that magical season himself. His ability to keep plays alive was simply amazing. Adrian Peterson was, well, Adrian Peterson. Percy Harvin is a talent unmatched. Darrell Bevell really had nothing to do with any of those performances. Then Bevell landed another “easy job” in Seattle.

But if you look at the Seahawk’s offense over the past 3 season it’s arguably the most boring and unproductive passing team in the league. I won’t fault Russell Wilson for that outcome. Seattle’s receivers seem to have no interesting routes to run, and Marshawn Lynch–a beast of a back–runs out of the shotgun.

All of this should have been noted when the Seahawks paid Percy Harvin big money to help out the offense. However, locker room scuffles and rumors put more of the blame on Harvin’s behavior than on Bevell’s lack of scheme. Gadget plays and other kinds of bullshit were used. Percy didn’t confuse a single defense.

If it hadn’t been for the Seahawk’s dominating defense, Bevell would have been let go long ago. But, now, following the Super Bowl loss (during which the idiot probably had his say in the dumbest play call in history), the team is struggling to use Seattle’s new offseason weapon, Jimmy Graham.

In the team’s first two games Graham had 9 targets for 7 catches, 62 yards, and a touchdown. Last season, in New Orleans, Jimmy had 18 catches for 200 yards and 2 touchdowns in the first two games. Arguably the best TE outside of Gronkowski in NE, Jimmy is a weapon to use in the passing game, not for blocking.

But as long as you have the “Dazzling” Darrell Bevell waiving his wand, Seattle’s offense will continue to drag along.
