It seems like these past couple months have been all about female athletes. We have USA Women’s Soccer winning the championship, Rhonda Rousey win a title in less than 34 seconds, and the first female NFL coach. These couple of achievements have only happened in the past two months!

With the USA Women’s soccer team winning the championship, you would think that the players would have received better payment. There was controversy over the payment with the team but that was only because there was less viewers watching the Women’s World Cup than the Men’s World Cup last summer. Of course, we would love to see the women’s team get paid the same amount as the men’s but there has to be enough people viewing these games.

After this huge accomplishment with the women’s soccer team, the next thing that happened was a woman was hired as a NFL coach. She was hired to the Arizona Cardinals. Jen Welter, graduate of Boston College and 14-year rugby player, helps coach the linebackers of the Cardinals. This is a huge accomplishment for women in sports! It is great to see women who participate in male dominant sports, not just on the sideline but helping out directly on the field. Another woman who is going to be on the field with the football players is Sarah Thomas who was also hired as a female referee. She will be a referee for the teams this season. These accomplishments have been amazing to witness! Women are not just people cheering on the sidelines, or reporting for sports, but they are a part of them as well, on and off the field.

Another female who has been in the spotlight for the past couple days is no one other than Rhonda Rousey. Rhonda Rousey fought against Beth Coreeia Sunday morning and beat her in under a minute (34 seconds to be exact). Actually, majority of Rousey’s fights have been under a minute and a half. Rhonda Rousey’s mother was also a fighter, too. Her mother won gold at the World Judo Championships in 1984. The 28-year-old has had 12 wins in her career as a fighter. Congratulations to Rhonda on her big win! I am sure we will see a lot of wins by her in the near future!

With all these women in the sports media, what do you think will be next for female athletes?
