Roberts Good Signing for Skins

The Washington Redskins have started to make the right moves in free agency this off season by addressing their need for a quick receiver, and more weapons for RG3; on Tuesday, Washington signed ex-Arizona Cardinal, Andre Roberts, with a deal worth around $16 million for over the next four years.  This is a first step in the right direction, for a team trying to get back on track, after a disappointing season.

Roberts will provide experienced NFL talent to the Redskins, going into his fifth year in the league, while being fairly consistent throughout his career. He currently has 11 touchdowns under his belt and averages 11.4 yards per reception.

Last season was low statistically for Roberts, since he was moved out of the starting lineup and forced to play behind Michael Floyld. Even though he was not starting, he was able to catch for 471 yards in 2013. I believe the Redskins will give Roberts opportunities that he will capitalize on this upcoming season. He has a strong chance to have the best years of his career in Washington.

The Redskins also have some special teams needs and hopefully Roberts’ experience within that facet of the game will come in handy. Without anyone reliable to count on, they have had tremendous return problems the past few years. Roberts has potential to be the punt returner and kick returner that the team has been looking for.

Signing him was an economically smart move, as he is an upgrade over current backup receivers, Aldrick Robinson and Santa Moss. It has been rumored that Joshua Morgan is headed to free agency and with Leonard Hankerson coming off a knee injury, signing Roberts is a big deal.  He will be a constant provider to Washington’s receiver rotation, as one of the most skilled and experienced options on the roster.

Even though Roberts is another short receive, he has decent speed that Washington can take advantage of in the middle of the field. During the combine, he ran a 40-yard dash in 4.36 seconds.  With Washington’s star receiver Pierre Garcon coming back, the Redskins are fortunate to get Roberts at an affordable price in the market. This was a smart move because the team has addressed one of their bigger needs early on this off season. Taking care of some of the team’s needs at the begin of the league year will allow Washington to focus on options to fill holes in free agency and the draft. For D.C. fans, this is something to be happy about;tThe team is moving in the right direction early on this off season.
